As an addendum to this - how many people go voluntarily to self-improvement workshops, vs. people who go because a boss or teacher etc said they should? This seems like it would be a important factor to consider, since it does have strong implications about who thinks this is helping.
(My high-school loved the damn things, so I got a couple a year for the whole time. It was better than classes, I guess?)
