There's also affiliate links. The bad end of this is essentially the same as the bad end of sponsorship, but it's *possible* to only link things that you legitimately believe are good and if you're sufficiently reputable it's even possible to convince people that that really is what you're doing. (I think I've also occasionally seen people who had affiliate links but *didn't* give recommendations, framing it as "if you'd like to support me, use this link to buy whatever you were already going to buy". Which is a bit twisting of the rules, but small-timers, at least, can get away with it.)

I often find that seeing an ad for a brand I already like makes me think *less* of them.

(I wince when I see ads for my university, because distance-learning schools have enough reputation problems as it is. Any organisation that needs to be clear that they're Not a Diploma Mill should not be touching banner ads with a ten-foot pole.)

((FTR, I learned about them through word of mouth: if you go to enough field trips and playdates with homeschoolers, you pick up stuff about alternative educational paths.))
